Spreadsheet Compare on a Mac, or without enterprise Office
已更新 2026年10月8日
快速回答
Microsoft Spreadsheet Compare (the Inquire add-in) runs only in Excel for Windows, with Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise or an equivalent edition. A Mac doesn't have it, and many other Office plans don't either. To compare two workbooks without it, upload both files to Excel Change Log in any browser. Changed values, formulas, formats, charts, and sheets are highlighted, and you can send a read-only link.
Who this page is for
You searched for Spreadsheet Compare because you have two versions of a workbook and need to know what changed. Then one of these happened:
- You're on a Mac. There's no Inquire tab in Excel for Mac and no Spreadsheet Compare app to install.
- You're on Windows, but the Inquire add-in isn't there. Your Office plan doesn't include it, or your IT admin turned it off.
- The person who has to approve isn't on your machine. A client, auditor, or CFO needs to see the same differences you see.
If that's you, this page lists your real options, Microsoft's included.
What Spreadsheet Compare is, and where it runs
Spreadsheet Compare is Microsoft's tool for comparing two workbooks. In Excel you reach it through the Inquire add-in (Inquire → Compare Files). It shows the two files side by side and colors each difference by type: entered values, calculated values, formulas, and more. It can also compare VBA code and export the results to Excel.
Where it's available, per Microsoft Support (checked October 8, 2026):
- Windows only. Microsoft says Spreadsheet Compare "is available only in Excel for Windows in Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise plans and equivalent editions."
- Specific editions. Microsoft's older Spreadsheet Compare help page also lists Office Professional Plus 2013, 2016, and 2019.
- Not in Excel for Mac. The Inquire add-in is a Windows COM add-in. Microsoft's Inquire page carries the same "available only in Excel for Windows" note.
- Easy to check. In Excel for Windows, go to File → Options → Add-ins, choose COM Add-ins, and select Go. If Inquire isn't in the list, Microsoft says "either your version of Excel doesn't include it, or your organization's system administrator has made it unavailable."
If you do have it, and the job is VBA diffs on that PC, Spreadsheet Compare is a good tool. Use it. The rest of this page is for everyone else.
Your options on a Mac, or without enterprise Office
1. Version History (Microsoft 365, including Excel for Mac)
Good for going back to an earlier copy of a file you've been editing in the cloud. The limits:
- It only works for files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint in Microsoft 365. Files on your desktop, a USB drive, or another cloud service aren't covered.
- With a personal Microsoft account you can get back the last 25 versions. For work or school accounts, the number depends on your library settings.
- With AutoSave on, a new version is added when you first edit, then about every 10 minutes for the rest of the session. It doesn't keep every save.
- You open an older version in a separate window, or restore it.
2. Show Changes (Excel for Microsoft 365, including Mac)
Review → Show Changes lists who changed a cell, when, and the previous value, going back up to 365 days. It's useful for one shared workbook that everyone edits in Microsoft 365. It doesn't help when you have two separate files, like an emailed copy and an export, with no shared edit history.
3. Formulas or conditional formatting in a third sheet
Put both sheets side by side and flag cells that don't match. It works for a small table of values. It won't flag a formula that was swapped for a hard-coded number with the same result, a restyled chart, or a renamed tab.
4. A visual web diff (Excel Change Log)
Upload the two files in a browser on any computer. You don't need a Windows PC, an add-in, an enterprise license, or OneDrive.
| You need… | Spreadsheet Compare | Version History | Excel Change Log |
|---|---|---|---|
| Works on a Mac | No (Windows only) | Yes (cloud files) | Yes (any browser) |
| Works without Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise | Needs a qualifying edition | Needs OneDrive or SharePoint | 是 |
| Compares two separate files (e.g. emailed versions) | 是 | No, only versions of the same cloud file | 是 |
| Highlights values, formulas, formats | 是 | Opens an older copy to view or restore | 是 |
| Charts and sheets added, removed, or renamed | Not stated by Microsoft | — | 是 |
| VBA / macro diff | 是 | — | 否 |
| Share a read-only link with someone outside | Export or copy results (no share link described) | — | Yes, viewers need no account |
How Excel Change Log does it, in 3 steps
- Upload Version A and Version B. Use .xlsx or .csv, in Safari, Chrome, or any modern browser. Matching sheet names pair automatically, and you can map renamed tabs yourself.
- Review the highlighted changes in a spreadsheet grid. You'll see changed values, formulas, formats, charts, and sheets added, removed, or renamed. Click any item in the change list to jump to it.
- Send a read-only link. Your approver opens it on a Mac or a PC, without Excel or an account. If the same file comes back every week, keep each version in a 變更日誌專案 and compare any two with one click.
What it won't do (so you can choose honestly): Excel Change Log doesn't compare VBA, doesn't open legacy .xls files, and doesn't merge workbooks. If that's the job, a Windows tool such as Spreadsheet Compare is the better fit.
