Version History restores the file. A change log shows what moved.

Microsoft Version History (OneDrive/SharePoint) lets you open or restore earlier whole-file versions. It does not highlight which cells, formulas, charts, or sheets changed. Excel Change Log is a browser visual diff: you upload Version A and Version B over TLS, review the grid, and can share a read-only link. You do not need the file to live in OneDrive Version History for that job. Try the limited free demo (no signup). For unlimited compares and account features, choose Weekly or Yearly.

Who this is for

You can restore last Tuesday's budget from OneDrive — but your approver asks which formulas moved, and Version History only gives you another full file. Or the workbook is still on email / USB / a shared drive that is not SharePoint, so Version History never applied.

What Version History does well

  • Included with Microsoft 365 when the file lives on OneDrive or SharePoint.
  • Restore or open a previous file version (malware recovery, unwanted edits, collaboration rollback).
  • Personal Microsoft accounts: last 25 versions (Microsoft Support). Work/school: depends on library configuration.

What Version History does not do

  • No cell-level / formula / chart / sheet-structure changelog for two versions.
  • Local, email, Dropbox, or USB copies are out of scope until they live in OneDrive/SharePoint.
  • No Excel Change Log-style read-only share link of a visual diff for an auditor who should not dig through Version History UI.

Privacy — how file handling works

  • Uploads use TLS/SSL.
  • Files are processed to run the comparison and stored temporarily so you can view results; demo uploads are ephemeral.
  • We do not sell or use workbook contents for purposes other than providing the comparison to you (see プライバシーポリシー ).
  • Shared comparison links are read-only; you can revoke them; they are not publicly listed.

Three steps

  1. Open the limited free demo (no signup), or use Weekly/Yearly for full account features.
  2. Upload Version A and Version B (.xlsx or .csv).
  3. Review highlighted cell/formula/format/chart/sheet changes; send a read-only link if needed.

Honest limits

  • Public demo upload cap: 1 MB.
  • Does not replace Inquire/Spreadsheet Compare for VBA.
  • Prefer Version History alone when whole-file restore inside your tenant is enough.

よくある質問

Does Excel Version History show which cells changed? ▼
No. It restores or opens prior whole-file versions on OneDrive or SharePoint. For cell, formula, format, chart, and sheet changes, compare two versions in a visual diff.
Do I need OneDrive or SharePoint for Excel Change Log? ▼
No. Upload two files in the browser. Version History only works for files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint.
Are my Excel files uploaded? ▼
Yes, over an encrypted connection, so the service can run the comparison. They are stored temporarily for results; demo uploads are ephemeral. See the Privacy Policy. We do not sell your workbook contents.
Is there a Free forever plan? ▼
No. There is a limited free demo (no signup). Paid access is Weekly or Yearly.
Can reviewers open the proof without an account? ▼
Yes. Paid plans can share a read-only link; viewers do not need an account. You can revoke links.
When should I stay on Version History alone? ▼
When whole-file restore inside your Microsoft tenant is enough and nobody needs a cell-level shareable proof.
Is this the same as Spreadsheet Compare on Mac? ▼
No. Spreadsheet Compare (Inquire) is a Windows desktop tool on qualifying Office editions. This page is about Version History vs a visual changelog. For Inquire/Mac, see /spreadsheet-compare-alternative.
